27th January 2010

January 28th, 2010

Teams:

Bibs: Todd, Rich A, Andy S, Ed, Andy N

Shirts: Allen, Andy L, Mike, Nick, Dave, Russ

Result: Bibs win  8 – 5 (I think!)

Match Report:

Unbalanced sides again this week – but you will have seen my little whinge on that – as it would seem the curse of the extra man has finally been lifted.

The match opened with shirts steaming into a 4-0 lead, the extra man clearly having an effect, but once organised, bibs came back strongly – aided and abetted by your match reporter, who had a truly woeful game – the shot I ballooned over the cage, balanced against the simple pass I let run between my legs epitomising my evening. At the other end of the scale Rich A could not stop scoring -  a fact he made quite clear to Andy N upon not receiving the pass he was expecting during a bibs attack.

Meanwhile Nick, who continued what is a rich vein of form, was let off remarkably lightly in my view for the Robinho-esque gloves he was sporting (albeit with good reason).  We were also treated to the sight of Andy L pulling off a truly remarkable curling shot from an impossible angle then strolling back with all the nonchalence of Zidane, as if this sort of thing happens to him every week.

In terms of scorers, I woke this morning with the uneasy feeling everyone pitched in but me – or there must have been a hat-trick in there somewhere.  I eschewed (how often do you see that word in a match report) the pub so can’t offer any insight into the post-match activities. Another injury-free week notched up too.

Oh and – United beat Citeh in the other match happening last night.

Seasick Steve

January 23rd, 2010

……..nuff said. Just listen.

Mind you – spent most of the evening listening to Goldfrapp – quality, as ever. That hour or so watching them rehearse at the Eden Project will live long in the memory. Cornwall – always, always, happy days.

If you have 10 mins – watch this

January 22nd, 2010

I was emailed this today. I find it both moving and remarkable. The video shows the winner of “Ukraine’s Got Talent”,  – but don’t be put off by the fact that it’s a talent show.

Kseniya Simonova, 24, draws a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II.  Her talent, which admittedly is a different one, is mesmeric to watch. The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about $130,000.

Read this little preamble about what is being presented:

She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated.

It is replaced by a woman’s face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman’s face appears.

She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier.

This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house.

In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye.

The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine, resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million.

Kseniya Simonova says: “I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears.. And there’s surely no bigger compliment.”

Here’s the link to the video.

It starts this weekend

GreenBud and I will be doing a quick smash and grab at Woods for supplies and then we’ll be planting those seeds……

20 January 2010

January 21st, 2010

Teams:

Bibs: Mike, Todd, Andy L, Nick, Grant

Shirts: Allen, Andy N, Rich A, Ed, Andy S, Russ

Result: Bibs win  6 – 5

Match Report:

Rumours of snow proved unfounded as we dragged our rusty bones (or is that just me) onto the pitch for the first time since the Great Snow (as it is now known). After a couple of late drop-outs (ambitious in the extreme to think you’d get away with playing after being away skiing chaps), the sides were rearranged and then re-jigged at the last minute with an – as it proved – astute switch from an Arsenal fan (how often can you say that). We forced the previous incumbents on the pitch off at a prompt 8pm and then proceeded to stand around for 10 mins, as per, sorting ourselves out. Even that delay wasn’t enough as Nick picked up LateOne’s mantle (should we contemplate fines?) but showed his worth late on in the game grabbing 2.

Things started at a fairly slow pace, some of us clearly still struggling with match fitness. The curse of the extra man shining through as ever, coupled with Todd/Mike’s usual energetic performances made this match a close one. The Bibs slick passing, organisation and positional sense from – may I say a leaner Grant -combined with a lack of structure (where is Rich N when you need him) and a tendency to overcomplicate what is, after all, a simple game, kept the Shirts honest and Bibs engaged.

And so it was that the match settled into a tempo of quiet, assured running by the Bibs and increasing shouts of “whose got Todd/Mike/Nick etc” and “c’mon guys – we’ve got the extra man” from the Shirts.

I won’t list all the goal scorers, because I can’t remember them, but suffice to say the majority were scored by the usual suspects – I think.

At the post-match conference, players spilt into two camps (as did the kitty); which could have been taken as a comment on performances but was more likely due to the large creche blocking the bar and the appearance of two non-football interlopers.

Spurious signs

January 19th, 2010
Jolly japesters at work?

My hopes for yellow lines are dashed

Random events in a road near you.

On Sunday evening, admittedly after a few beers, I wandered home to discover an 9ft sign at the bottom of our road. Thinking I must be dreaming I photographed it. Wandering on, I got excited about the fact that the council had finally come to their senses regarding commuter parking in our road. Sadly not. By the following evening the sign had disappeared again, and no yellow lines had materialised. Due to the fact that it had fallen over, it did however use up a parking space for a day – which pleased this author. Little things.

The Croyde Bay Cup

January 18th, 2010

The Croyde Bay Cup (or something similar anyway)

Looking forward to the annual pilgrimage to the Devon coast – oh, and the small matter of the Croyde Bay Cup. Thanks due to Big Sam for organising – as ever!

Seed distribution

January 18th, 2010

At last night’s BCGS meeting – we were issued with our share of the kind donation of seeds from the English Chilli Company. Better get planting. Although I noticed yesterday that Smith has chewed a hole in my portable greenhouse – thanks Smith!

Secret ingredient

January 11th, 2010

Have just been told about a secret ingredient that helps promote great chilli growth (the peppers rather than the plant).  I shall report if it works in due course – although that will probably be after this year’s competition is over!
